This is never an easy question to answer, so take my opinion with a grain of salt ...
I suggest that if this is your first character and you do not already have an RP group to play with, you keep your back story simple. The more flexible your character is the more options you have for joining a variety of RP groups.
Save the complex back stories and the detailed head cannons for when you find a group who is doing the same things you want to do.
You should not need more then your characters first name, its birth region, and its general profession. Instead focus on your character's personality traits, likes, dislikes and perhaps one interesting and unexpected defining element.
