Haafingar lies along the north western coast of Western Skyrim and includes the hold of Solitude. The most recent ESO plotline came two years ago from the Grey Host who began an attack on the country with Harrowstorms. The Harrowstorm threat was diminished by the Vestiage and their compatriots, King Svargrim dies, and his daughter Svana recognized King Jorunn and was herself made Jarl of Haafinger.

History
Haafingar (also called Haafingar Hold and the Kingdom of Solitude) is a relatively small, mountainous, coastal hold in northwestern Skyrim. Its capital is the famed city of Solitude, and the two are sometimes treated as one and the same. Solitude is perched atop a large rock outcropping known as the Great Arch, towering high above the Solitude Inlet, which is found at the end of the Karth River and the massive Karth delta. However, Haafingar is far more than just Solitude. The Karth River allows for a great deal of commerce in Solitude and the town of Dragon Bridge in the Karth River Forest (mostly in timber and fish), and the long Giant's Coastline with the Sea of Ghosts is littered with frozen shipwrecks and treasures. Mount Kilkreath and its associated mountains take a large portion of the hold and it is filled with caves and ruins where bandits and creatures make their homes.
The hold shares borders with two other holds, the Reach to the south and Hjaalmarch to the southeast, and the province of High Rock borders it to the west, the Forgotten Vale found between the hold and Wrothgar. The mountains of Haafingar are only the tapered end of the Druadach Mountains, an enormous range of jagged mountain peaks to the south which rise up among the clouds of the Reach. Read More ..

Various points of interest in the area give us clues to what is going on in the region.

Dragonhome is basically home (ba dum tss) to a wanna-be Dragon Cult that "resurged" after the events in Elsweyr. They basically believed that they could bring a dragon back to life and return the cult to prominence. The Resurgent Dragon Cult never really ventured beyond Dragonhome as far as I'm aware. They're dangerous, but isolated and secretive, and possibly scattered to the winds but that's not confirmed.

Notes

Dragonhome, Shadowgreen, Sword's Point Watchtower, Wolf's Eye Lighthouse, and Ysmgar's Beach. There's also a Harrowstorm site and Giant camp, though unnamed.

Dragonhome is a rather extensive Nord ruin in the mountains aboce the coast and home to a resurgence of the Dragon Cult, and rather close to the fjord we settled on be (if it is where I think it is).

Shadowgreen is a series of caves under the mountains near Solitude, heated year-round due to it being inactive volcanic vents.

Sword's Point is abandoned, as far as I know.

And the lighthouse is fairly close to Solitude and operational.
