Clothing (Guide)

From Hofborg

So it’s important to recognize that the clothing options for ESO are complicated, and are a product of the game’s continual improvement. I am presenting the types of clothing in ESO from what I believe is a mostly chronological stand point. My goal is not to be historically accurate to the game release, but only that by explaining in an order of simple to complex I hope players will digest the concepts more completely.

Show Equipped Items

When “no outfit” is selected on the Character (c) screen under outfit you can see what you have equipped. This is the default. The simplest way to change your look is to change what you have equipped on the character.

You can acquire all kinds of armor and items in the game, including new player items like the traveler’s boots and shirts which are low level clothing items.

Additionally, our guild can send you a selection of low level items you can equip, but will not be useable as game mechanic armor. Just ask.

Crafting Motifs

At some point, ESO released crafting motifs which allows a crafter to create craftable armor and CHANGE its look to be something else which is collected as “Crafting Motifs”. In this way you can get craftable armor that has the properties you want to wear AND look how you want to look.

This is what the guild does when we send you low level items in different styles/motifs. Motifs are also available in the outfit station, below.

Style Pages

As things went along, the request for more clothing options increased and ESO released what are known as “Style Pages”. Style pages can NOT be crafted, they can only be used in the outfit station. You can change your outfit by going to the Character (c) screen and selecting a different outfit.

  • Outfits are created at an Outfit Station
  • Crafting Motifs are available in the Outfit Station in addition to Style Pages
  • Outfits override the displaying of your equipped items.

Costumes

The next thing we have are costumes. Costumes can be found by going to Collections (u) -> Appearance -> Costumes and equipping them. Costumes override both what you have equipped as well as the outfit you have chosen.

Additional Notes about Clothing

Costumes
Are crown purchases usually, and can be dyed with ESO+ at the outfit station, otherwise you need to purchase dye packs to dye costumes.
Style of Armor
The STYLE of armor does not show in the name. Only the armor type or set shows in the name. So if you have a set of Hunding's Rage made in the Nord style, it will display as Hunding's Rage, not Nord in your inventory.
